The story of Zeus
As Walter Burkert points out in his book, Greek Religion," Even the gods who are not his natural children address him as Father, and all the gods rise in his presence."
Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea. He was the youngest of his siblings. Zeus's father (Cronus, king of the titans) had murdered his own father, Uranus so that he could become king of the gods instead. As uranus was dying, he gave Cronos the prophesy, “You murder me now and steal my throne—but one of your own sons will dethrone you, for crime begets crime.” Cronus was very afriad and worried that his children would do the same to him, so every time his wife Rhea gave birth, he would eat the child. Rhea did not like this, so she came up with a plan. After the birth of their sixth child, Zeus, she gave her husband, Cronus a stone to swallow instead of the baby. She hid Zeus in a cave and the young god was brought up by a goat. One day, when Zeus was older, his mother, Rhea brought him back to the court of gods to be a cup-bearer. Rhea and Zeus decided to work together to try to get rid of Cronus. They concocted a drink for him, and when he drank it, he vomited up all his children that he had swallowed which were still alive because gods could not be digested. Then Zeus led his siblings into a battle against father Cronus and the titans. Zeus and his siblings won the battle, an Zeus became the king of gods, fulfilling the prophesy made to Cronus.
