Who was Zeus?
Zeus is the king of gods according to Greek religion. He was the god of the sky but also the supreme ruler of Mount Olympus and all the Olympians. He could control the weather and his most powerful weapon is the thunderbolt. The ancient Greeks had always believed that when lightning and thunder hit the earth, it was a sign of Zeus being near. Zeus had been previously called 'cloud-gatherer' and 'thunderer' by the ancient Greek poet, Hesiod. Zeus had always been concerned with hospitality. If you treated a guest or stranger badly you could outrage Zeus. But some say he was not a faithful husband, and in return, his wife, Hera was not a loyal wife. There are many different beliefs about the kind of god that Zeus was that are very different.
Zeus was said to have had many different wives. All beliefs are different, but some of the goddesses that were said to have married him were: Metos, Themis, Titaness, Leto, Hera and Dione. Some people believe that Zeus had Athena with Metos, and some believe that Dione was the mother. Zeus was known for having numerous affairs with mortal women producing even more children including Hercules.
